Laser Treatment for Periodontal Disease
New Technology. New Comfort. There are variety of treatment options to reduce gum disease-causing bacteria, but none as minimally invasive and effective as the LANAP® protocol. The Laser New Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) uses the state-of-the-art PerioLase MVP-7™ laser to safely remove harmful bacteria and diseased tissue, while leaving healthy gum tissue intact. LANAP can be used in patients with mild to severe cases of gum disease, and must be performed by a licensed professional. Dr. Arta Farahmand is specially trained in LANAP, and has successfully treated hundreds of cases with high patient satisfaction.
How Does LANAP Work?
Before the procedure the area being worked on is anesthetized for patient comfort. During the procedure, a small amount of light energy from the laser is directed through a tiny fiber, which is gently placed between the gum and tooth. This light energy removes a tiny amount of diseased tissue and aides in reducing the bacteria associated with the disease. After the area is thoroughly cleaned, the body can heal the area naturally. This procedure preserves the healthy gum tissue instead of removing the healthy gum with diseased tissue. This procedure reduces root exposure and sensitivity. It reduces infection by killing periodontal bacteria.
What are the Benefits of LANAP Over Traditional Treatment Methods?
While osseous surgery and other treatment options are effective, LANAP offers these benefits:
- Minimal pain and discomfort during and after treatment
- Less swelling and bleeding
- Reduced recovery time
- Costs around the same as traditional gum surgery
- Only protocol to regenerate bone around teeth
- Little to no risk of gum recession
How do I Know if LANAP is Right for Me?
If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, Dr. Farahmand can discuss if you are a candidate for LANAP. Most patients do qualify for laser therapy, even those with heart disease or diabetes, since it is considered a safe alternative to traditional osseous surgery. If you have been treated for gum disease previously through other methods, LANAP may be recommended if the infection has resurfaced.
