Reestablish Support Around Existing Dentition
Bone grafting is a procedure used to replace bone that has deteriorated in the jaw. Bone loss is caused by advanced periodontal disease, trauma and chronically missing teeth. If enough bone around a tooth is lost, the tooth becomes mobile and unstable, and may require extraction. Dr. Arta Farahmand sometimes recommends bone grafting to help save these teeth and improve your oral function.
Bone Grafting Increases Candidacy for Implants After Bone Loss
When bone loss occurs, the foundation needed to support tooth replacement with implants is affected. Like natural teeth, dental implants need strong, healthy bone for support. Implant posts are strategically placed within the jaw and integrate with surrounding healthy bone. However, they do require sufficient quantity and quality of bone structure to be successful. If you have suffered tooth and bone loss, a bone graft increases your candidacy for receiving dental implants.
The Bone Grafting Process
Our practice invests in the latest in bone grafting technology to ensure the most favorable outcomes for your smile. Dr. Farahmand uses Platlet Derived Growth Factors, Plasma Rich Fibrin and Emdogain when performing bone grafts. These advanced healing techniques improve tissue response and reduce recovery time following treatment. Prior to beginning the bone graft, we administer anesthesia and ensure your comfort. The gum tissue is gently retracted and bone tissue is mixed with desired growth factor to enhance healing and increase bone regeneration capability to areas of deficit. Sutures are then placed and homecare instructions reviewed. Bone tissue may be harvested from your own body, or a donor source may be used. Our approach to bone grafting may vary, depending on the location and extent of bone loss.
