What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is a common condition affecting millions of Americans. It is caused by toxins produced by bacteria residing within biofilm, a matrix of plaque and other substances that covers the teeth, gums and spaces in between. The body reacts to these toxins by destroying the bone and structures supporting your teeth. If left untreated, gum disease can cause significant damage to the mouth and body. There is no cure for gum disease, but Dr. Arta Farahmand provides the advanced care you need to treat this destructive infection and keep its progression at bay.
THE STAGES OF GUM DISEASE
The earliest stage of gum disease, gingivitis impacts only the gum tissues. Effects of the condition are reversible, if identified and treated in this stage.
Gingivitis symptoms include:
- Bleeding gums
- Swollen, red or tender gums
Periodontitis occurs when gum disease progresses and causes damage to the underlying bone and periodontal ligament. In this stage, the gums begin to pull away from the teeth and periodontal pockets deepen. Unlike gingivitis, the effects of periodontitis are not reversible, and immediate treatment is needed to prevent further damage.
Periodontitis symptoms include:
- Sensitive teeth
- Gum recession
- Presence of pus
- Tooth mobility
- Tooth loss
